Legalize Hemp and Cannabis in California

Hi Family,

"And if my words did glow, with the gold of sunshine. And if my tunes were played on the harp unstrung..." Please help these words to ripple... ripple becomes a wave... wave becomes a tsunami... pretty soon my priests/priestesses are out of jail.

Right now there are two competing signature drives to put Cannabis legalization initiatives on the ballot in California in November 2010.

One is found at www.taxcannabis2010.org

The other is found at www.CaliforniaCannabisInitiative.org

Please look carefully at the text of both laws (the text of each is finalized) and make up your own mind which one you support.

I am supporting www.CaliforniaCannabisInitiative.org because our law will protect Cannabis users from discrimination in

healthcare, employment, and housing. It is a full legalization measure for industrial hemp and recreational cannabis which will restore full human rights to Hemp farmers and Cannabis users all across California. Of course supplying Cannabis to children will remain illegal just as it is today. Driving vehicles under the influence will remain illegal just as it is today. Cannabis users will still be fired from their jobs if they show up to work impaired.

There are two parts to our plan. The first part is to publicly post and personally distribute our "Freedom Lover's Call to Arms" in order to recruit volunteers. This document is available here-

www.imgur.com/dbU83

The second part of our plan is to ask everyone who volunteers to make a pledge for how many signatures they can collect in

the next 30 days or so. 15-30 signatures is a good number. If enough volunteers show this level of commitment we can succeed. You can probably get that number from your family members, friends, co-workers, and neighbors without having to solicit in public too much. This is an "out of the closet" movement. We will have to proudly advocate human rights for responsible, honest, hard-working Cannabis smokers in order to convince legitimate people to support us. I can supply stickers equivalent to each persons pledge number. These stickers can be used to generate interest and be given to voters who sign the petition. Here is the sticker design-

www.imgur.com/2cjvb

Feel free to distribute and use these images. Just don't copyright them.

We have 145 days in order to get the number of signatures that we need. Our petition is hot off the press on 9/11 and we

have started collecting the first signatures yesterday 9/12.

We are polling 56% public support for Cannabis legalization in California which menas that this is an initiative which is not doomed. Its time has finally arrived; we are at the tipping point right now. Now is the time to do this and to do it right. We may only get one chance. If a law which is not exactly what we want is implemented then we may lose our critical mass and our ability to set it right.

I believe that less adults will smoke cannabis after it is legal. This is the case in the Netherlands where it has been

available over-the-counter for 30 years yet only half as many citizens (percentage-wise) smoke as do citizens here. My economics professor has taught for years that prohibition has not succeeded in decreasing usage by increasing penalties. Instead it has destroyed lives and families without substantial benefit to society. After legalization hard-drug usage will decrease due to a "separation of the markets," a decline in the price of Cannabis relative to hard-drugs, and the restoration of honesty and common sense in drug education. Violence, thievery, and the incarceration of honest people will decrease as well. I also believe that a well regulated market will decrease the availability and appeal of cannabis to children. In fact teenage Cannabis use in California has fallen steadily since the passage of Proposition 215. Furthermore the adults who smoke Cannabis after legalization will be better able appreciate the majesty of nature in peace and unity without learning to fear and disrespect authority figures. This will be better for their spirits and better for society. Finally the human rights of legitimate medical Cannabis patients will be better protected than they are today. Legalizing Cannabis will create a safer, healthier, and more humane California for us all to live in.

If you want to help us in any way please contact the CCI campaign at www.CaliforniaCannabisInitiative.org or write me at
deep_space_underground@yahoo.com I give you my encouragement to modify this message if necessary and distribute it to anyone who might help on any forum or by any mechanism.

Love,
-Fully Committed

Kids, if you have any possible way of getting yourself to these shows, do it. This is going to make all the Warren Haynes bullshit of the past 8 years totally irrelevant. This is the real deal, and it constitutes the passing of the torch to the next generation. You watch. Phil and Bobby will keep up with this for a while, and then they'll pass it to the young guys to keep the flame lit for the next generation. We're on the cusp of something really exciting here.

Somewhere...out there... is a picture of me inside a Dead show. You and I had never met, but you asked to take my picture and said you would mail it. It was '93 or '94-ish and probably in Eugene, Oregon. I was a girl in my very early 20s, with long curly brown hair, and probably wearing a pink peasant top and a Guatemalan wide-brimmed hat. Do you have that picture? I've wondered about it for years. There are absolutely no pictures of me on tour, since I was staunchly opposed to film back then (being from the polluted town where Kodak made film will do that to you).

Cubensis and fans trashed by Easy Reader reviewer

A personal message from Craig Marshall

I'd like you to read something, probably the most vile piece of "scumbag journalism" I've ever seen.

In the South Bay Easy Reader, reporter "Ryan Beachkofski" wrote a review of our recent show at the Lighthouse, in which he denegrates Cubensis, the music of the Grateful Dead, and worst of all, he rants rudely and insultingly about you, the fans.

It's shocking, actually, to think that any one person would stoop to writing such trash, whether he liked the band or not. This man, (who is not listed as a staffer) even has the gall to put down others in his profession who have written good reviews of the band.

In fact, you can't really call his drivel a "review" because he doesn't critique our performance, but rather he hurls insults and assults the dignity of our faithful fans while maliciously tearing into our performance and your attendance. It's unbelievable!
Read this garbage and see what you think

Here's what he wrote:

Live Music Review
Cubensis
by Ryan Beachkofski
Published June 19, 2008 in the Easy Reader

Cubensis, a self-proclaimed Grateful Dead uber-tribute band, needs an editorial kick in the hemp shorts for three specific reasons:

First, a band could be the finest tribute band on earth with the ability to cover trademarked songs from the originators without a glitch or misstep. Fine. I have no argument that Cubensis may play Grateful Dead music to undeniable perfection. I wouldn't even know because I race to the tuner every time I hear one of the hillbilly heroin-induced-wannabe-jazz car crashes make it to air play.

Secondly, I just don't get it.

Finally, I feel that Cubensis' following is bad for business.

It's a shocker, I know. But Cubensis has a 40-member hard core following that heels when the band comes a calling. Every band wishes for that blessing and every house booking agent knows that phenomenon is too good to turn away.

The standard envelope for four sets of anything, no matter the number of members in a band, is $300 flat, unless the band has a name or an in-pocket following that plans to buy drinks. Cubensis asks for north of $1K.

After my 10-minute punishment that put me in front of this band, I realized a few things about their groupies:

1) You're not helping the cause of saving water by refusing to shower. You only contribute to methane gas emissions that cause global warming. 2) Is it absolutely necessary to immediately remove your flip flops when entering an establishment that serves food and drink? And 3) don't show up high. That's what the bar is for. Pony up those few pieces of silver and buttons you keep in that silly pouch you made from hemp rope and sunshine and invest in some commerce.

I took note from a reliable source after leaving the musical water boarding and asked the employee of another club about this band and its following: "You're right about the asking price and the patronage. They want a thousand bucks and the hippies don't spend a dime on drinks. The band gets the take at the door and we get left with bupkis and hours of mopping up after the blackfoots."

In essence, I don't care if Bill Walton and the other hundreds of thousands of VW van-driving bad dancers see color in the music. I am utterly disappointed in my colleagues that inscribe "Cubensis plays with the same laid-back mastery as the Real McCoy."

That is just plain promotional banter for hire.

Cubensis is just an extension of the original Grateful Dead, whose music drove me to madness at UCSB (where the free-range Dead Heads account for the lingering odor of BO and patchouli oil). If you love it, great, please keep it to yourself. I, on the other hand, will practice my civic duty and choose not to choose. And get your carbon monoxide billowing vans a tune up. Forget "Saving the Rainforest," as your bumper sticker denotes. Save oxygen by getting that piece of #$@%! off the road. ER
--------------------------------------------------

Wow! I ask you, how does that make you feel, to read this hateful, intolerant attack on our scene in general and our fans in particular? I'm sickened, and incensed that this poisonous rubbish was allowed to be published. It harms our reputation, it might very well cost us business, it defames our faithful fans and likens our performance to a torture session.

I've read many a review of Cubensis shows by reputable, sincere journalists; most are favorable, some aren't, but this goes way too far! This hostile and possibly libelous smear campaign is not even a true review of our show! As he says, he only stayed 10 minutes, and barely acknowledges the music other than to rant about how much he has disliked it for years. This is not a review, it's a personal and very negative attack on all of us.

Those that know me also know that I rarely get angry...but this is different. I want to strike back and protest against this sickening and unacceptable criticism, and I hope you'll join me.

If you're as shocked as I am, I'm asking you to take a moment and express your feelings to several editors at the Easy Reader newspaper. I think a retraction is in order; you may have other, better responses, which I encourage.

You might mention how much you enjoy the performances, especially at the Lighthouse, and how Grateful Dead music has made your life more enjoyable, and how offended you are by the reporter's depiction of those in attendance.

There's several ways to respond:

c/o Easy Reader
PO Box 427
Hermosa Beach, CA 90254
To the extent that you are able to participate in this, I want to thank you. You might think that this idiot's opinion is not worth getting upset about, but I think it's important for us to stick up for things we believe in and enjoy.

I'm outraged by this "reporter's" despicable opinion, and this is my own personal response to being maligned.

Sugaree

10-17-1983--perhaps the best version on the archive, great quality source, it's a one set source and the rest of set one is solid (Sugaree opens), but this version is a must-have
09-06-1980--Garcia pulls out some pure inspiration that elevates the crowd in this one...definite must-hear...aud source that is a 4 star quality
03-25-1985--huge...16th note city
10-16-1977--Garcia straps on his Travis Bean for a 76' sound amidst 77' level of playing. Very nice quality source. Inspired playing.
12-28-1979--sweet version

Tennessee Jed

10-10-1982--perfection, awesome vocals, dead on solos and licks, album perfection
11-25-1979--Garcia digs into his bends, great build-up
09-16-1990--latter day great version, Garcia and Hornsby take it around the block a couple of times...

Ramble On Rose

07-08-1978--groovy, yet tight arrangement (nice Weir interplay), excellent quality on the archive
09-28-1972--supertight
03-09-1981--well done (goes into El Paso)
09-26-1981--aud source, but very nice version
03-29-1990--showcase that tight Spring 90' sound
09-22-1993--excellent sbd source
05-21-1995--on a beautiful afternoon in Vegas, Garcia makes you forget it's 1995

Loser

Valentines Day recommedations-They Love Each other

They Love Each other Debuted in 1973 and played mainly with a shuffle beat as oppossed to the more groove oriented approach that you hear on Garcia's "Reflections" album...the Dead worked revamped this tune in 1975 and played it pretty consistently through the 70s and 80s...it was a JGB staple

personally I prefer this tune after they ditched the weird bridge in 1975...

no particular order...

09-28-1975 Golden Gate this is a great version...reworked to the reflections arrangement...

02-26-1977 San Bernandino nice

05-08-1977 Barton Hall snap crackle pop

09-03-1977 Englishtown NJ maybe my favorite version ever...

11-17-1978 Chicago really check out Keith's playing on the solo break 70s rock city...

12-30-1981 Oakland nice version

05-06-1989 Frost

09-10-1993 Richfield Coliseum classic version

JGB

09-16-1989

St. Stephen-
One of the more difficult songs that the GD played, the earliest known version to my knowledge is 06-14-1968 at the Fillmore East (a stand alone version)...this tune became part of the "core" suite of tunes that the GD jammed in 68-69...typically this went Dark Star>St. Stephen>The Eleven>Lovelight...i always loved the early "High Green Chilly Winds" section...St. Stephen was shelved in 1971, reappeared in a slower arrangement with Donna singing along in 1976, the tune picked up more steam through '77-'78, cameoed in early '79, then re-emerged for 3 more appearances in October of 1983.

Recommended versions...

08-24-1968-Shrine Auditoreum--Vault 2, a great one
09-02-1968-Raspberry Farm--really uptempo, rips
02-28-1969-Fillmore West -- Live Dead version
03-01-1969-Fillmore West -- classic show classic version
04-26-1969-Electric theater, Chicago...nice!
06-24-1970-Port Chester
09-19-1970-Fillmore East--hot
04-28-1971-Fillmore East
06-11-1976-Boston--groovin' jam
05-08-1977-Barton Hall
06-09-1977-Winterland, brilliant segue from Estimated
10-15-1977-Moody Coliseum, rockin', nice sbd quality
12-30-1977-Winterland--on Dick's Picks 10
01-22-1978-maybe the best late 70s version
12-31-1978-Winterland-sweet version
10-11-1983-MSG-crank up the audience, just to hear the reaction, but...
10-15-1983-Hartford-is the better version from '83
The intergation of Brent Mydland continues and his mere presence lifts the energy and creativity of the band. Soundwise, the tinkling keys are a welcome respite from early 79' lethargy...Weir, amazingly, is considerably more laid back in terms of effects than he will get in coming years...Garcia uses alot more distortion this year, which I prefer actually and many songs benfit from this enhancement...the acoustic run in October matched it's potential...great shows sprinkled throughout the year...a band deep in a touring groove...some nights good, a few nights maybe ho-hum, but the skull crusher was always around the corner...

the shows...

(note: I find 80 to be sadly under-represented in terms of sbds on archive.org, fortunately taping heroes like Jim Wise have given us some great sounding aud sources)

01-13-1980--Cambodian Benefit short set, nice versions of T-Jed, Playin', NFA with Santana...

03-31-1980 passaic...well played show

04-01-1980 hilarious promised land with the band playing the wrong instruments(April fools days)...nice overall show...

05-07-1980 Barton Hall...a fat juicy soundboard of the second set run of Shakedown>Playin>Terrapin is a must have...PLayin' in the Barn

06-15-1980--Colorado--The opening UJB must be heard...happy 15th!

06-20/21-1980 Alaska nice tapes abound of this Alaskan run, worth checking out...Estimated>, and a huge Sugaree opener are highlights from the run...

09-02-1980 Sugaree and Estimated are as good as they get...Aiko Morning Dew

09-06-1980 another killer Sugaree (which one is better? who cares!) rest of show is great...playin' shakedown...

10-10-1980 One of the best shows of 1980, under-rated...Jack Straw, one of the all-time Scarlet>Fires...big railroad blues, Althea are top-notch...great acoustic set as well...

10-11-1980 one of the best acoustic sets of the run, electric sets are enjoyable...

10-13-1980 Acoustic set is A+ quality and playing, check out the El Paso and the Heaven Help the Fool, everthing is good...decent electric sets, quality not as good...

10-14-1980 Great quality, almost as good as 10-10, has an A+ set list, but the best jams of the night are in the more mundane material...

11-29-1980 actually a better show than 11-30, the band is rockin'...nice first set...hot Alabama opener, Row Jimmy floats on the ether...Shakedown has a wide collared, coke on the mustache groove...segueway into>>>Franklin's is played to the hilt...

11-30-1980 The Scarlet Fire gets alot of pub. however, there are other interesting nuggets, mainly the first electric bird song since 06-22-1973...

12-12-1980 Estimated and the Other One beg to be listened to

Standing On The Moon.Definitely a personal favorite. When someone judges a post drums Jerry ballad,i wish they would judge the whole song.Too many times Garcia would fuck up SOTM,SMR,Stella, etc. and then at the end of the song he would just go OFF vocally to make up for it.People always fell for it,and the last few years it seemed like the "be with youoooooooosss!!!" were more scripted than spontaneous.I judge the whole song and the spontaneous Jerry vocal factor...heres the best Standings
12-6-89
9-10-91 (branford)
3-16-94
8-21-93
7-07-89 (last show at JFK,predrums SOTM)
and the Granddaddy of them all...
06-07-1991 Deer Creek..the best SOTM ever done

Note-The SOTM from the 90s msg Dicks Picks rates pretty high, but one of the factors for that show for me is there was three HUGE Garcia songs post drums(SOTM,DEW,Baby Blue)which was quite rare.An epic night

Playin in the Band a Weir song?No No No No

I Think its well known that im a HUGE Garcia fan far and above any other GD band member.....and alot of "Weir" songs (Estimated, L.L. Rain etc....)are really Garcia songs because the Guitar just Melts........
what would victim or the Crime be without Garcia?.....So heres a few suggested versions of a Great "Garcia' song
Best Playin in the Bands...(so many to choose from, hard to pick one version), but these versions set the standard for their era's...

08-27-1972 (Garcia is possessed)
12-02-1973 (melt-down jam)
06-08-1974 (great 74)
04-14-1982 (long and dreamy)
10-15-1983 (classic)
03-16-1988 (Garcia rips)
07-29-1988 (jazz fusion)
10-16-1989
12-30-1990
05-26-1993 (my favorite "modern" version hands down)

Help on The Way>Slipnot>Franklins Tower is A classic trio performed on the Blues For Allah album (1975). Help on the Way remained basically unchanged throughout the years, however Slipknot! always made for some of the Dead's most interesting and jammed out instrumental sequences. Franklin's Tower was sometimes paired with other song's, often in the first set(remember the Stranger>Franklin's?), but was best in it's original design, coming on the heels of Slipknot. HSF was played from 08-13-1975 to 10-11-1977 consistently, it was revived on 03-25-1983 thru 09-12-1985...brought back during the Warlock's shows 10-08-1989 and remained in the rotation until it was last played on 06-22-1995.....I Think brining this back at the Hampton shows really, really, REALLY revived the Grateful Dead and Their fans....I for one, will always have this classic Trio in my top 10 files of favorite songs (Foolish Heart will always be in my top 10 too, with the other 8 constantly changing)...so here you go....No lot scene, no veggies in this burrito, just pure meat!

Best Versions

08-13-1975--The first version with lyrics remains true to the album cut and is played with confidence and energy
06-14-1976 spirit of 76'
05-09-1977--classic
06-09-1977--my favorite version of 1977, huge slipknot, great quality recording
10-11-1977--from the so-called "primal" Dead show (as called by Dick Latvala):$, definitely check it out, good raw energy, Garcia is on
05-15-1983--best version of the 83' revival, Garcia smokes classic riffs throughout and in Franklin's he pours it on...
10-08-1989--Warlock's shows, back after 4 years, very well played
06-14-1991--terrific (Welnick actually does some good shit on this one)
09-10-1991-with B. Marsalis..... a little slow, but epic nonetheless
06-28-1992--great show opener
08-22-1993--Garcia burns on his new guitar (great Lesh riffs)
09-22-1993--awesome quality recording, band is tight and play with precision

Note- You may notice that i use the word "Epic" sometimes. Tome, "Epic" is a very powerful word in the English language that has been cheapened over the years from overuse....When is I say something is "Epic"..i mean it

Best Stella Blues..include

05-15-1983 is the best of the 80s (great singing, awesome middle solo, Weir and Garcia wind it up beautifully at the end with a Garcia fan-out)
06-18-1974 is the best pre 75'
10-21-1978 is perfectly realized (crappy sound on the archive though)
03-18-1988 is pretty darn good
05-26-1995 Jerry gets it together for one last great version
03-21-1994 has been mentioned as best, its not, but is a fantastic version
08-01-1991 Jerry-B Day and hes got somethin to say at the end.Pretty Big Time

Note- I know there is alot more. These are personal favorites...but they are very good and highly recomended

I dont care what anyone says...there were still some great shows in the last 2 years(although epic shows were few and far between)......The use of telepromters came in since Garcia (and Weir) were having a hard time remembering lyrics to such a vast reportoire. I have heard people complain about the use of telepromters, which is asinine. Whos cares? Without Telepromters, do you really think Garcia could have nailed "Visions Of Johan na" like he did at Salt Lake (2-21-95)? I think not.
Best 1994 shows were 3-16, 3-21, 6-19, 6-26, 7-2, 9-29, 10-1, 10-3, 10-5, 12-16, 12-18, 8-1 (Garias b-day,Stella Bluuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu!!!!!!!!!!!!!) to name a few

10-1 may be the best show front to back...a bunch of other shows have their moments...3-16 and 3-21 are really good and 09-29 has a great second set...

Best 1995 shows were probably 2-21, 3-23, 4-5, 5-21, 5-26, 5-29, 6-2, 6-25, 7-2

2-21 was the best show of 95,because it had the best "Visions of Johanna" ever done and a great "Foolish Heart"(top 3 foolish heart all-time) and Liberty...Garcia is pretty tight, 5-26 is another real keeper, 3-23 is pretty good throughout the whole show...5-21 is well played...

The Grateful Dead in 1981 Co-fucking-Caine!

I take the Grateful Dead for granted sometimes...1981 is not the greatest year ever or even of the 80s but what I would give to get back a band that still has some youth, vigor, energy and took their act on the road and slugged it out for 80 gigs a year, mostly giving you your money's worth...1981 gives us a band on the move, hitting Europe for the first time in 7 years...and finishing with a monster 4 set New Years Eve...sprinkled through the year is some excellent music...The bands '81 sound is a bit more compressed than '80 and '82 would see a change to a rounder more "acoustic" sound (with Mydland playing alot of synth piano)...

05-06-1981 Nassau-- perhaps the most "known" show outside of New years of 81. Features the "This one's for Bobby Sands" He's Gone>Jam>Caution...but don't miss the rest of the show, nice first set...Dick's Picks Release

10-16-1981 Amsterdam Melk Weg Hash Bar--Weir's 34th Birthday played in a tiny hash bar...great acoustic first set...second set features Lovelight, Hully Gully breakouts...

12-31-1981--Oakland Coliseum--not the best new Years gig, not even in the top 3, but it's the longest and they basically play it all, minus St. Stephen...definitely check it out to say you did...

05-16-1981 Cornell-- Crisp recording of this show exists...great energy...Shakedown

12-30-1981--Oakland--One and a half set show...First "Set" features top shelf versions of Rooster and Cumberland...Dire Wolf and They Love Each Other are excellent and a red hot jam turn up in Supplication...

10-19-1981--Spain--Garcia is all over Let It Grow and Scarlet>Fire sears...Jerry is blazing his solos throughout this show...not super long jams, but to the point...

03-09-1981--...great first set...Bird Song...one of the best Altheas ever...China Rider...

05-01-1981--one of the best audience copies out there, the 80s equivalent to 08-06-71...great first set...very enjoyable show...not fireworks but definitely worth listening to as it gives you a great live sound...

08-28-1981--Long Beach--despite a flub, a top 5 version of Shakedown...Spanish jam

10-03-1981--check out the second set...Feel Like a Stranger...Bird Song...

The Grateful Dead 5-8-77 Cornell Over-rated? Nope

I just read a review of 5-8-77 and the reviewer was pretty down on the show saying it was overrated.I used to feel the same way, maybe because everyone would always blow their load over that show and i tend to roll my eyes at "everyone" because quite frankly most Deadheads are morons and idiot drug users(i too am a drug user but no idiot). Most people cant give an honest opinion about a GD show,or that PigPen was a Bum,Or that without Garcia none of those guys would have even come close to making it as professional musicians.anyway,i listened to 5-8-77 for the first time again in a while and all i can say is WOW.I was wrong,it may very well be the "greatest"show ever if you could pick one...Its Super tight the whole way through, with an Epic Row Jimmy,my favorite BEW,And the Greatest "Dancing in the streets" and "A.M. Dew" ever played. The Scarlet Fire deserves the credit it gets as one of the best ever(although my favorite is 6-7-91),great Phil Lesh on "Fire",but its probably not THE Best Scarlet Fire because the guitar solo between "Let her Pass by" and "Wind in the willows" isnt anything to write home about, and thats the best part, also, that stupid Drunk Keith is so gooddamn rudundant on the transition from Scarlet to Fire and his stupid fat ass wife wont shut the hell up with her lame ass screaming.Shes terrible.Hes an average piano guy from central casting...the whole second set is pretty insane though,GREAT NFA.Should have pulled out "Baby Blue"(had only played it one time so far) for the encore instead of omsn, which makes the show not perfect, but almost.....Give it a listen again

Some People get bored of "He's Gone".well, its time for a blood transfusion for some of you.....you need to start listening to this song again. Its a beauty.......
""He's Gone" debuted in at Tripoli Theatre in the Netherlands on 04-14-1972...originally a song to Mickey Hart's father who ripped off the band as a manager, it soon became a second set warhorse and an ode to whomever may have kicked the bucket during the tour, i.e. Pigpen, Brent, Bobby Sands, Bob Marley...

best versions I've heard in chronological order

09-28-1972 Stanley Theatre vintage 72 interplay, great coda jam...

03-31-1973 awesome version tucked in an outstanding 73 sequence of tunes...check it out...

06-10-1973 classic show altogether, with the allmans during some of the jam, not on this tune

10-18-1974 Winterland...sweet

12-01-1979 Stanley Theatre groovy version with Brent now in the fold...goes into Gloria

05-06-1981 Nassau the Bobby Sands version, definitive version, goes into big jam...

08-03-1982 Starlight Theatre crystallizes out of space (a very rare set placement for this tune)...just a great version...goes into other one...

06-20-1983 this one during a lightning storm, nice 83 sound...

06-30-1985 thick, phat 85 quality...Weir dials up just enough whammo effects, spins into Crytical (which is rough but closes nicely)

11-01-1985 another chunky 85 version...

09-16-1990 MSG nice...people refer to this one as the "Brent" version even though they played it on 09-08...whatever...check it out...

04-04-1991 Omni this one comes out of the ether, mixed just right, great playing...

06-22-1993 Deer Creek the best 90s version...tight groove, great singing and long inspired coda...

03-21-1994 Richfield Coliseum last great version close second to 06-22-1993...inspried set as well features great Lovelight>Stella Blue> Lovelight sandwich...

06-07-91 is my favorite...

10-1010-80 is epic

03-22-1990, 09-04-1991, 10-01-1994 are great 90s versions

06-18-1983, 09-11-1982, 03-31-1988, 12-28-1986 (definitely a gem that nobody talks about, Garcia smokes his solos and proves to the Oaktown audience that he is truly back), 10-17-1981 tight and fiery

Have not really went through the whole year thorouhly (yet)-
Jerry Garcia's main guitar in 1976 was his white Travis Bean, this guitar had a rounder, more mellow sound than the wolf and strat that preceded it or the tiger that followed...this affected the 76' band sound...as a juicy tidbit, check out 10-16-1977 for a 77' show that sounds like a supercharged 1976 show, in part because Jerry breaks out the Bean...
The Grateful Dead in 1993..the beginning of the end

1993 was the last good consistent year for the Grateful Dead. Jerry Garcia was rejuvenated after his "break" in 1992 and even switched guitars midway through the year (debuting Lightening Bolt 08/21/93). The embattled Vince Welnick started to finally loosen up a bit and the rest of the band was tight. The very best shows of 1993 are some of the best of the 1990s.

Best shows of 1993

1. 09-22-1993--Lesh is a monster this show, great set list and David Murray is brilliant on sax
2. 05-27-1993--A+ set list, Fire, Cassidy>UJB
3. 05-26-1993--1st set Samson, All Time Playin'
4. 09-13-1993--Scarlet.Fire, Terrapin, Dark Star
5. 08-22-1993--Jack Straw, Help>Slip>Frank
6. 08-21-1993--Bird Song, China>Rider, SOTM!!!
7. 03-24-1993--excellent sbd quality
8. 09-09-1993--strong set 2 with Amazing DEW!!!
9. 06-22-1993--strong show, incredible He's Gone
10. 06-11-1993--goodshow at Buckeye

honorable mention: 03-16-1993 (Fire jams and UJB is on fire), 03-17-1993, 03-25-1993, 04-05-1993 (INCREDIBLE 1st set), 06-15-1993, 06-25-1993, 09-10-1993, 12-10-1993

06-20-1983 is a phenomenal 80s version

09-22-1993 is a monster version with David Murray on sax...

worst shows...off the top of my head...10-06-1994 is pretty dreadful ("features" worst morning dew ever), alot of the 1995 shows were scary, but that's common knowledge, never liked 09-09-1991, though quality is good, something about the show is annoying, perormance defines flat and mediocre..there are a couple of bombs in late February 1971...the 08-24-1985 Boreal Ridge shows has been mentioned, but on tape it comes off as a very disjointed show, but China Cat is actually pretty good, though very fast...Boreal Ridge has it's bad reputation more on the physical elements surrounding the gig itself...there are honestly a couple of '73 first sets that are highly disposable...I always thought 02-11-1986 with the Nevilles dipshits is a throwaway, they can't decide on a rhythym together to save their lives...09-24-1988 MSG Rainforest Benefit, save for a kick ass Aiko Aiko and West LA Garcia's voice is beyond bad, he sounds like he's blending gravel in a cuisanart...worst vocal show ever maybe...unlistenable...that's it for now...

Terrapin Station

Terrapin Station is one of Garcia and Hunter's most ambitious works. While Hunter performed all the movements live and on record, the Grateful Dead have given us a highly produced full version on the album "Terrapin Station" and have jammed out the "Lady With a Fan"/ Terrapin Station ever since. The song debuted on 02-26-1977 to open the show! (pretty ballsy by the Dead). The "Full" Terrapin was played once, on 03-18-1977, this version included the Alhambra ending. This tune never was dropped from the repetoire and was last played 06-30-1995 in Pittsburgh.

Best Versions

02-26-1977--The first one is pretty damn good for a debut.
03-18-1977--not the best 77 version, but definitely check it out for the Alhambra jam
05-07-1977--tight
06-07-1977--dreamy show
12-29-1977--Beautiful Encore
01-22-1978--despite a couple of Bobby clams, great version with a jammed out post jam
12-31-1978--classic
05-08-1980--great 80
09-17-1983--under the staryy sky
08-31-1985 opens second set, nice representative of the mid 80s
12-31-1987--orchestral
03-31-1988--well played
08-04-1989--hot 89'
03-15-1990--phil zone version
09-13-1993--very nice (also check 09-09-1993)
12-18-1994--last great version (teleprompters were on at this show ;P) Garcia rips some nice runs in the post-jam

other terrapin versions of note--
06-23-1993--kind of sloppy, but about mid way through, they lock on and the boys absolutely soar in the x zone in the post jam...

06-26-1994--over-rated, but worth a listen, I suppose...interesting post jam goes on for awhile, very jazzy...

was 1992 a great year?nah, but there was some highlights for sure.....

In my opinion,1991 was a great year, with over 80 percent of the shows leaving me very happy.1992 was a 50/50 situation as far as great shows, and epic shows started getting few and far between. That being said, there were some very good ones in 1992,and a few epics(12-16,6-28) and there probably would have been more if Garcia didnt fake the sickness to get some time off.
heres the best of 1992,

2-22-92
3-5-92
5-20-92
5-24-92
5-29-92
6-22-92
6-28-92
12-5-92
12-16-92
12-17-92

add on 10-31 too (JGB comeback)

by the way,my opinion carries weight here because im not some hippy that would rate a show a 5 just because they played Dark Star(id rather hear 20 other songs than DarkStar)or because i was high on kind acid or because i bought some shitty falafel off some fake hippy in the lot while doing nitrous. Its all about the music and music only...

Would people stop giving every goddamn show 5 star reviews on archive.org??Would people start reviewing the actual show?Nobody gives a shit that you drove 15 hours and your piece of shit car broke down and some kind disgusting"sister"with terrible hygiene miracled you and you ate a bunch of acid and Bob Weir was singing to you and your uncle died and Jerry played "hes gone" for him and the grateful dead was controlling the weather...Jesus fucking Christ, enough already. If i give a bad review to a show people immediatly jump down my throat and say im a scumbag and i just dont get it,blah, blah, blah.Well guess what, some of these shows are really fucking bad, thats why its called a "REVIEW"section. Some people actually go there and try to take something out of the reviews, sometimes if i read a few terrible reviews i wont download.Forget all this stupid peace loving filthy hippy shit and give a realistic review, lets make the archive a serious music site, not rainbows and waterfalls.com...People have written numerous times that they saw Jerry Crying during Stella Blue or So many roads or whatever.Thats such crap.I have been to over 300 shows, and i never once saw the man cry.Why the fuck would a grown man cry during Stella Blue?Cry?Tears?Huh?Thats preposterous.Maybe the dude was crying tears of joy for all the money he was making. If you tell me you saw Jerry Garcia cry during any song im here to tell you your a fucking liar.what a joke.People want to worship this man like he can do no wrong, and i personally think he is far and away the best musician ever for my personal taste, and i love the GD,but lets face it,the guy was a junk food eating, deadbeat dad, crackhead, heroin junkie, selfish slob.It is what it is.The dude didnt shower for weeks at a time.Would i go out and Party with Garcia?Hell fucking yes!!!That would be great.Would i let that guy babysit my kids?HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!Now thats a joke!!!I wouldnt let him watch my dog.
Some of you might say"You just dont get it Tito".No,YOU just dont get it.Snap into reality. Please just review the shows based on band performance and sound.
By the way,all you morons that love to Wash Weir and Leshs balls,i say this. There is not one man(except Midland)In the GD that would have even come close to playing music professionally without Garcia. Not a chance. Those dudes were cool with the GD,but lets face it,the GD is Jerry Garcia.Look at the ridiculous bullshit"Phil and Friends" and "The Dead" these days. Its terrible.Unintentional comedy in its highest form.A Joke

The GD in 1984

1984...it was the year of Reaganomics, George Orwell and Jump! and yet, The Dead were still doing their thing, for better and for worse. We all know about Garcia's health timeline, but in '84 he might have looked his worst (summer '86, '95). His voice started to really go and would waffle from fozzee the bear pudding throat to decent. At this point, there is a noticeable shift in sound production by Dan Healy, one that would carry over to 1985. Garcia's tone is fatter ala '85, than the more compressed ("crisp/ metallic") tone of 1983. Weir began really using more effects, particularly phase shifters, ring modulators, flangers, envelope wah pedals, than he had in years prior. Lesh's bass sound is getting thicker as well and the drummers have incorporated more coiling, rolling, quad effects during drums. Brent also establishes that caliope key/ organ sound that he uses on damn near every song...and he begins to master the bassett hound singing style that we all came to love ("tolerate") in the mid to late 80s.

All this being said, the Grateful Dead still put forth a few rocking shows in 1984. it's still the Dead and when they're on they're "on", no matter what year...right?

the Recommended Shows (caveat: this is an ever mutating list, of course, I probably forgot a show or two)

04-01-1984--Marin Veterans Memorial Stadium--Great second set includes H>S>F, Terrapin and Morning Dew, the best April Fool's show

Jack Straw, Friend Of The Devil, Me & My Uncle-> Mexicali Blues, Big Railroad Blues, Cassidy, Tennessee Jed, My Brother Esau-> Don't Ease Me In

Help On The Way-> Slipknot!-> Franklin's Tower-> Samson & Delilah, Terrapin Station-> Drums-> Morning Dew-> I Need A Miracle-> Goin' Down The Road Feelin' Bad-> Good Lovin', E: Touch Of Gray

04-20-1984 Civic Center, Philly...nice all around show

The Grateful Dead in 1989

1989 was another classic year in the Grateful Dead's career. Garcia was in full stride 3 years after recovering from his coma and the band introduced many new songs during the year (Victim, Standing on the Moon). MIDI technology debuted on 04-16-1989 and allowed the guitarists to sample an endless catalog of horn and synth sounds. There was a great momentum that built through the year that carried over into 1990. The Dead even pulled one over on the Concert Promotion industry by playing the Warlock shows on 10-08 and 10-9 (the 10-9 show featured a Dark Star break-out after 5 long years). Though Garcia and Mydland couldn't keep a cigarette out of their fingers or a coke straw out of their noses for more than five minutes, the sometimes gravelly singing is offset by some very inspired playing and a much jazzier approach to songs like Playin' and Terrapin...

6. 10-08-1989--Warlocks, 1st Help/Slip since 85'
7. 07-17-1989--Alpine 89 ROCKS!

march 6, 1981 stanley theater, pittsburg.
my first dead show.
tiny (2500 or so?) velvet curtain theatre venue.

i was a freshman at u of michigan, and my buddy pat and i hitchhiked down there from ann arbor.
it was pretty much winter.

my cousin jeffrey normal had some ins, and scored about 8 of us 12-row centre tix.
it was also the 3rd time i had hung out with a couple of albert hoffman's sons. a couple of big boys they were too!

so there i was, a most appropo beginning to my relationship with our beloved saint.
(i don't think those words are too strong... in my case, definitively and empirically not! more for further discussions...)
for much of the show, i was seeeing the colors of the notes jerry was ripping up and down the scales... (more on this later...)
kind of ala fantasia. (ever seen that old disney classic? go check it again, with a hoffman, or caterpillar stool...)
and i watched my other buddies girlfriend, who i had a not-secret crush on (to her anyway), turn into a beautiful black panther... yummmm
franklins tower was... killer. beyond words. or i was at least.
then, right at the end, right while he was singing don't ease,.."when i awoke the dire wolf...",
jerry looked out, over his specs. and i saw his eyes.
and they were lit up RED, like the dire wolf. it was kind of scary.

i didn't even know how great it was, how lucky we were.
the next day, pat and i had to hitchhike back up to michigan, and we got stuck in ohio for a loong freekin cold time. hard to get a ride in ohio.

was anybody there with me?

when was YOUR first Contact with the Big Guy (Upstairs)?

set the record straight

People have been talking shit about me and others for not agreeing with everything some idiot posts.so lets set the record straight.
Hey man, again, why does it have to be all rainbows and waterfalls.Ive seen double the shows of all you dudes combined, and im a HUGE GD fan.I hated the scene,i hated that because of scumbag hippies Places like the Greek and Deer Creek got ruined.I hated Spare change punks.I hated that when you told a "Head" you had a ticket for face value he would look at you like you were crazy, that he DESERVED the ticket for free. All those hippies were idiot posers."you want to buy a kind grill cheese brother"?hell no,look at your filthy fucking hands man.beat it.Leave me alone. If you didnt have on a goddamn dress or were wearing patchuly you were a "Lame Local".What?Fuck you!I was most DEFINITLY not there for "The Scene".I was there for the music, plain and simple.First 10 rows preferably. And i didnt need some orange sunshine to enjoy it.(i did do LSD).There was no "cosmic energy",the grateful dead did not"control the weather".If you believe that, you really are a moron. They were a great rock and roll band that did tons of Hard drugs and fucked a bunch of women, like all rock bands. These guys were not hippies anymore, believe that. You can pretend you liked "space"all you want, but your lying and you know it.When was the last time you listened to"space" on a tape or a download? You dont,i know it and you know it.I LOVE Jerry Garcia, and i like the rest of them. But these guys are on a big money grab now and quite frankly, they stink.I dont like their music.Garcia is gone.He was 90 percent of the GD.Again, while your listening to Phil and friends butcher "wharf rat",im listening to Garcia play an epic"Ship of fools"on my CD player. The latter is the better.

To people that review GD shows on archive.org

The GD in 1979

The end of one chapter, the beginning of another...

Keith and Donna Godcheaux left the band after their last show (02-17-1979). Brent Mydland was picked up to handle the keyboards and back-up vocals. His energy and creative new sounds spurred the band to some outstanding performances. The band sometimes had a very jangly, groovy sound. New material featured on the album "Go To Heaven" was also debuted that year and tracks such as Althea and St. of Circumstance remained concert staples until the very end.

A note about 1979 shows. Unfortunately some of the best shows of 79' are available only on mediocre audience recordings. The sbd's from 1979 typically sound very good (12-01-1979 prime example). In general, the era of 1979-1983 is under-represented in good, clean soundboards.

Recommended Shows of 1979

1. 12-01-1979--great sound, set 2 is classic
2. 12-28-1979--fine performance
3. 05-09-1979--post Truckin Jam!!!
4. 02-17-1979--Keith and Donna go out in style
5. 10-27-1979--Other One is Godzilla
6. 11-25-1979--Jerry rips
7. 05-08-1979--huge show, need sbd
8. 12-26-1979--Dick's Picks creative sets
9. 02-03-1979--last big K & D Scarlet>Fire
10. 12-05-1979--Smooth show

honorable mention: 01-10-1979, 01-20-1979, 04-22-1979 (Brent's first is under-rated), 07-01-1979 (snake pit Samson), 08-12-1979 (estimated...), 09-05-1979, 11-09-1979

The GD in 1985

 tito33
Posted: 01/08/08 9:12AM ET
1985 may be the most over-rated year in Grateful Dead history. That being said, there is some decent music played by the band that year. Everything sounded big and thick in 85'. Garcia was a fat slob and his voice was borderline shot, but he did some serious rocking. Weir was in fine form and perhaps at the peak of his propensity to use heavy effects. The sbds available on the archive also showcase how full and loud Lesh was in the mix and the creativity shown by the drummers. 1985 is well represented on the archive. 1985 is heavy on fast playing, fast tempos of the "slower" number (like Eyes) and it's share of sloppy playing...If 1985 did anything though,it gave us the undisputed Heavyweight Champion "Shakedown" ever (6-30-85)

recommended shows

06-30-1985--amazing quality, decent first set, huge second set with all-time Shakedown Street, hot Samson, classic He's Gone and woozy Cryptical.
06-25-1985--great sbd recording. great first set, under-rated 2nd set showcases a fine China>Rider and Playin'
03-25-1985--mixed bag on quality, but 1st set deserves a listen, 2nd set is interesting.
03-27-1985--Half Step break out and Tom Thumb's debut. Great Shakedown, nice UJB
04-06-1985--hot Walkin the Dog in the first set and a prime Cumberland, 1st set is a great listen. Good quality.
09-07-1985--Red Rocks
06-16-1985--Greek Theatre huge Other One
07-01-1985
08-30-1985--1st set epitomizes 85'
11-01-1985--one of the best 85' shows
11-07-1985--Let it Grow

of note is 08-24-1985, the notorious Boreal Ridge show, which some consider to be the worst show ever...China Cat is actually pretty good, the rest of it is bum-rushed but not as bad as some of the 94/ 95 stinkers (Highgate 95' comes to mind)

Was '77 the Grateful Dead's best year?.....probably

1977 is considered to be one of the very best years in the career of the Grateful Dead. Jerry Garcia was 35 years old and in his prime. The vocals were smooth and the instruments had a beautiful blend. Set pieces like Scarlet Begonias>Fire in the Mountain were introduced and the band devastated audiences with powerful versions of The Other One, Not Fade Away and Help Slipknot! Frank through the year. Shows from 1977 are commonly traded and some of the best quality recordings from the 70s are from 1977 (the Betty Board source).

Recommended shows from 1977:

02-26-1977--debuts and inspired playing
03-18-1977--great sound
03-20-1977--check out Scarlet Begonias
05-08-1977--perhaps best of 77'
05-09-1977--first set is classic
05-19-1977--inventive show, Sugaree and Dancin'
06-07-1977
06-09-1977--amazing show/amazing quality
09-03-1977--top 3 of the year
10-02-1977
10-11-1977--ragged but powerful show
10-29-1977--extremely tight performance
11-05-1977
12-29-1977--Winterland, China Rider breakout
12-31-1977--good, strong New Years show

Walk Me Out in the Morning Dew--Bonnie Dobson

This is the premiere ballad sung by Jerry during the career of the Grateful Dead. This song turned into the show stopper and often ended a show on a climactic bang...I offer the following list as a reference tool--criteria include: technical mastery (precision), emotion, lyrical and vocal performance and the Jerry Factor, etc...

The Best Morning Dews (these rankings are subject to change, of course...)

08-27-1972--Veneta--The best and most psychadelic and spiritual performance in the Dead's career. The bootleg film "Sunshine Daydream" captures the afternoon's activities.
Highlights are many...China-Rider, Playin', Greatest Story, Bird Song, Dark Star>El Paso, Sing Me Back Home

12-31-1978--Winterland--The best New Year's Performance. The Dead and Bill Graham close Winterland in style. A+ set list...they do everything...

05-08-1977--Barton Hall--Sure people say its over-rated(its not), but to not have this show in a top 10 list would be asenine. Top shelf versions of Dancin, Scarlet>Fire, Estimated, St. Stephen>NFA>Morning Dew...the band's in peak form.

06-07-91-Deer Creek...The Second set may be the best Second set of the 90s......Seriously,give this show a listen from the first note of Scarlet to the last note of "Weight" every song they do in the second set could be a "best of version".Hornsby shine

03-26,27,-87- Hartford---WOW!

06-17-91 Giants.hate to put two shows so close together but it is what it is....check out the "eyes"first set opener, its smoking, and its on "you tube"

03-29-1990--Nassau Coliseum--Branford Marsalis guests on sax and the band finds heaven in set 2. Bird Song, Eyes of the World, Dark Star, Knockin' On Heaven's Door...

06-18-1974--Freedom Hall--Incredible 74 show. Great sound quality and premiere versions of Wake of the Flood songs. Jazzy Dead.

09-20-1990--MSG--This is the most intense show of the 90s. Bruce Hornsby is with the band at this point. Explosive set 2.

10. 08-13-1975--Great Amercian Music Hall--very unique show deserves a place in everyone's collection. Blues for Allah material is played beautifully in this intimate setting. (This is the official View from the Vault 1)

am i a "Touchhead"?

People have been saying things like"Get off our bus touchhead" and "your not a real deadhead"Why?because i dont prefer pre-71 GD?It is what it is man,and quite frankly, its basic shit, and some of it stinks. The sound is NO WHERE NEAR the quality of later years,so thats a big turnoff too when listening to tapes/cds/whatever.So if a new guy wants to get into the GD and is looking for recommendations,i tell him to go with the Bertha>Goodlovin from 77 or a Sick A.M. Dew from 89.I Guarantee they will like it better than some stupid spacey 5 hour Dark Star from 1970 that everyone pretends is awesome but deep down we all know its not.It can even get annoying.People need to stop lying and start telling the truth. So what if some dickbag doesnt think your "kind" if you dont crank "cream puff war" all day.Tell that stupid fake poser hippie wanna be to fuck off.Its my motherfucking bus,YOU get off.

What exaclty is a touch head?is it someone who likes the band post 87?Someone that likes the newer songs from post 87?Thats me man.Im guilty.I am a huge fan of "Touch of Grey" "Standing on the moon","Days between","Foolish heart","Throwing stones","So many Roads", etc...Your going to tell me im not a real "deadhead",get the fuck out of here you scumbag. I forgot about more shows that you and your crew have ever come close to seeing, and thats a reality...im a huge fan of the actual Band.So if you think that one of their songs was better because it was the "first time played" as someone put it,your fucking out of your mind.Take that stupid deadbase shit and shove it up your ass...some dude actually wrote today that the "Phil and Friends" from BCT in 94(really Garcia,Weir, and welnick) was good and he recommeneded it.He said something about the last accoustic time they ever played together.Again, deadbase nonsense.I dont give a fuck if it was the last accoustic show they played together, that show fucking sucked. There was not one "wow" moment. Not one(i know they played Duprees, blah, blah, blah).I was at that show and i wanted my fucking money back.Garcia sure as hell didnt want to be there that night.i get a good laugh too at the dude that said the band and audience had "telepathy" going. What exactly does that mean? Are you trying to tell me that they could read each others minds?Like witchcraft or some shit?Do me a favor and think about that statement for a minute, and maybe you will realize how absurd you sound...again,the sound and chords and solos are WAY more basic pre-71,and i think a new guy would love Some MSG 89.Deer Creek 92 H/s/f night kicks ass too.

you all know im right.Oh yeah,Kreutzman and Hart were way average drummers too.Not to say i hate them,i dont. They are probably cool dudes. But is Mickey Hart some kind of drum legend he thinks he is?thats a fucking joke!!!

The GD in 1992

my opinion,1991 was a great year, with over 80 percent of the shows leaving me very happy.1992 was a 50/50 situation as far as great shows, and epic shows started getting few and far between. That being said, there were some very good ones in 1992,and a few epics(12-16,6-28) and there probably would have been more if Garcia didnt fake the sickness to get some time off.
so heres the best of 1992

2-22-92
3-5-92
5-20-92
5-24-92
5-29-92
6-22-92
6-28-92
12-5-92
12-16-92
12-17-92

add on 10-31 too

Now you may say"fuck 92,give me a top 10 from 72"...i cant, dont know too much about 72.I cant even give you a top 10 from 77(my favorite year)but i could give you some great shows from 77.Im just an expert of post 87 Dead.

by the way,my opinion carries major weight here because im not some hippy that would rate a show a 5 just because they played Dark Star(id rather hear 20 other songs than DarkStar)or because i was high on kind acid. Its all about the music and music only...

CUBENSIS a GARCIA approved recreation experience

Hey there,

I was surfing the tribes and thought you might want to join my tribe for the band Cubensis cause if your into music ( why I'm asking cause it seems you are) then you'll dig the sounds of Cubensis the only Jerry Garcia approved Grateful Dead tribute act.

The group has its craft so well refined that even members of the Grateful Dead themselves, such as keyboardists Vince Welnick and Tom Constanten, have appeared on stage and performed with these live music interpreters. Dead rhythm guitarist Bob Weir praised the band, saying, “Just love what you do...and of course, you do!”

The band doesn't reproduce the Grateful Dead's songs note for note---though it would be hard for most listeners to tell. The Dead's music is highly improvisational, with rock, country and jazz influences. Cubensis members say there's room for interpretation while staying true to the original. “It’s all about tapping into the same inspirational flow,” says Cubensis guitarist Craig Marshall. Dead guru Jerry Garcia granted Marshall permission to recreate the Dead’s music, as long as he "did a good job" of it. “I told him we played all Grateful Dead songs,” recounts Marshall, to which Garcia replied, in mock surprise, “Oh yeah? So do we!”

So come join the Cubensis tribe and celebrate thier 20th year anniversary http://tribes.tribe.net/cubensisband

Conversations with Uncle Jerry

lets see what uncle Jerry has to tell us, please feel free to respond to his quotes, he might be up in the heavens enjoying the planetary cyber conversation---

"For me, the lame part of the Sixties was the political part, the social part. The real part was the spiritual part."
----
So true Uncle Jerry, I feel if we all had the mass sense of spiritual oneness in humanity like back in the sixties, we might be able to reclaim the love and faith it takes to make these non-violent movements work.
___________
"I don't know why, it's the same reason why you like some music and you don't like others. There's something about it that you like. Ultimately I don't find it's in my best interests to try and analyze it, since it's fundamentally emotional. "
___________
"Constantly choosing the lesser of two evils is still choosing evil. "
---
Go Green! Save the environment. Stop playing the silly red-blue games, our earth has no more time for red and blue, or we will have an over abundance of red and blue, in blood of innocents and extra ocean from global warming.
__________
"I mean, whatever kills you kills you, and your death is authentic no matter how you die. "
---
So true, we are very 'Grateful we're not Dead!'
________
"If we had any nerve at all, if we had any real balls as a society, or whatever you need, whatever quality you need, real character, we would make an effort to really address the wrongs in this society, righteously. "
---
Yes we would, with non-violent protest! This "war" must end before we lose any more Family. Does it really take a draft to make people recognize that their friends could die for a vain/greedandgain cause?
_______
"The alternate media are becoming important and viable alternatives to playing live. Records, videos, that kind of thing. They're going to start to count for something. Because there's only a limited amount of us-time available to us. "
---
Very prophetic of you uncle Jerry, its a trip when people know they will die young, i don't know if the drugs make a person more aware of their place in their life cycle, or help them deteriorate faster, probably both. This idea is also true in terms of family, take lots of pictures and cherish every step on our path, who knows when our 'Us time' will be up.
_______
"The real problems are cultural. The problems of the people who take drugs as a cultural trap - I think there's a real problem there, the crack stuff, the hopelessness of the junkie. The urban angst. "
---
resurgence of Shamanism and energy healing through etheobotany ! why label all spiritual music "christan?" lets have some general sprituality for all, and sneak it in our music though out all genres.
________
"The whole thing is remembering, this is who we are. Remember who we are? We are in reality a group of misfits, crazy people, who have voluntarily come together to work this stuff out and do the best we can and try to be as fair as we possibly can with each other, and just struggle through life."
---
This applies to society as well as the Family. Remember who we are (a Family) and let us be kind to eachother.

GOODSTOCK 2007 - This Summer

Hi Everyone -
I just wanted to pop in at let you know about Goodstock 2007, if you haven't already heard. It's being produced by Artie Kornfeld (Woodstock 69) and Doug McClurg, and from what I'm seeing already, it just might be the place to go this summer. I've pasted their release below. If you're interested - pass this along. It could be the music event of this century.

I know they're also looking for tribute bands. Bands and soloacts should send all presskits and inquiries to allan@retro69.net, not Goodstock.
Hope to see everyone there -
Joanne

Woodstock - Preservation Archives
www.woodstockpreservation.org

Goodstock 2007: LAST CHANCE TO EXPERIENCE THE REAL WOODSTOCK 69!

GOODSTOCK 2007 MUSIC FESTIVAL. 3 DAYS OF PEACE & MUSIC
FROM THE CREATORS OF WOODSTOCK and the MIND GARAGE

GOODSTOCK 2007 will bring together the most amazing 60's and 70's bands from coast to coast for a 3-day festival. Iron Butterfly, Jefferson Starship, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Mercy and dozens of others, including the Electric Prunes, will reunite for this musical extravaganza. Experience the music, rock culture, peace and brotherhood of that era! Bands and fans - from Boston to Berkeley - will finally experience the musical event that they have waited decades for since Woodstock!

“I have watched the attempts to copy Woodstock by others, “ comments Artie Kornfeld, Goodstock 2007 promoter and co-creator of Woodstock 1969. "To me, these were over-commercialized attempts to take a great event and use it to rip-off rock and peace lovers. I consider Goodstock 2007 to be the first real attempt to have another 3 days of peace and music."

Goodstock 2007 is produced and promoted by Larry McClurg, of 60's band Mind Garage, and Artie Kornfeld, famed music industry song writer, manager, producer, and most notable as co-creator of the 1969 WOODSTOCK MUSIC AND ART FAIR - rock history's greatest 'happening' - on Yasgur's farm in upstate New York.

With nearly 50 bands booked to date, Goodstock 2007 will be held July 19 - 21, 2007 on 1000 rolling acres at the Good Evening Ranch in Summersville, West Virginia. Like Woodstock 1969, Goodstock 2007 is a 3-day music and camping event. The ranch will be transformed into Goodstock Village, as a festival of the sixties offering memorabilia, clothing and band attire, a 60’s museum style exhibit, bands performing continually, as well as a San Francisco style light show.

Camp in the Village or stay in nearby hotels. The Village will accommodate bands and music festival fans from nearly every state in the USA, as well as countries worldwide. Unlike Woodstock's for-profit imitators of recent years, Goodstock admission prices - that include camping - start at $28.00 for one day and go up to $75.00 for all 3 days. Goodstock 2007 is all about peace and music instead of generating profit.

According to Larry McClurg, Goodstock promoter, "Imagine the excitement of seeing the stars and legends of rock who played the Fillmore East, West and Woodstock, with the bands who opened for them, and the fans who were there, all in one place again. That's what Goodstock 2007 is. This is not an attempt to go back, re-create or re-visit. It is a new 'happening' and an opportunity for the whole family to experience a re-awakening of the ideals of peace and togetherness through music."

More information on the event, band line-up, and purchase of tickets is available by visiting the Goodstock website at: www.goodstock2007.com/

GOODSTOCK is produced and promoted by
Larry McClurg, Artie Kornfeld and Goodstock LLC.

Just finished reading this book by Robert Greenfeld--pretty compelling stuff. It was really a trip to be able to contextualize the music of each era against what was going on in Jerry's private life at that time. Really gives a powerful insight into the guy. What an amazingly complex and unique person he was. Simultaneously more artistically powerful than anyone alive and not even capable of the most basic self-maintenance at times. But then, Isaac Newton had to have full time supervision or he would be found wandering around naked because he was so lost in his own thoughts. A mark of genius, perhaps.
